Union Filmtheater Bochum

The Union sits in the Lueg-Haus on Kortumstraße, finished on 1 October 1925 as Bochum's first high-rise at 32 metres and originally a car showroom. The hall was destroyed in the war behind a surviving façade and reopened in 1950 as the Union-Bühne with up to 1,600 seats; until 1953 it doubled as the stage of the Bochumer Bühne, where Peter Zadek among others directed. The 1980s cut it into ten screens on the American model, and a rebuild in 2000 reduced those to seven, about 1,382 seats in all with 388 in the largest, keeping the art-deco detailing. It stands in the middle of the Bermuda3Eck bar quarter. The programme is first-run and mostly dubbed, with a standing original-version strand, a Monday repertory slot, Best of Cinema, sneak previews, anime and children's films.
