The Japanese animation studio founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Spirited Away won the Golden Bear in Berlin and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Ghibli films return to German cinemas year after year, from My Neighbor Totoro to The Boy and the Heron.

DEFA
The state film studio of East Germany, founded in 1946 in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Until 1992 it produced around 700 feature films, among them Trace of Stones, The Legend of Paul and Paula and Jacob the Liar, the only DEFA film nominated for an Academy Award. Its films still run in German cinemas.
