The Berlinale is one of the big three festivals alongside Cannes and Venice, and the largest in the world by public attendance. The 77th edition runs 10 to 21 February 2027, directed by Tricia Tuttle.

What it is

Unlike most A-list festivals, the Berlinale sells tickets to the general public, not just the industry, which is why it is the world's largest film festival by attendance: 343,200 public tickets were sold in 2026. Its top prizes are the Golden Bear for best film and a set of Silver Bears, decided by an international jury. Every film screens in its original language with subtitles, never dubbed.

New in 2027
A Wednesday opening and two Audience Days

The 77th edition opens on Wednesday 10 February, one day earlier than the traditional Thursday. That moves the awards ceremony forward to Friday 19 February and, for the first time, gives the public two dedicated Audience Days on 20 and 21 February, when the awarded and most-wanted films screen again for everyone.

Always in the original

A Berlinale screening is never dubbed. Competition and Berlinale Special Gala films carry both English and German subtitles, or German surtitles at the Berlinale Palast; films in the other sections screen in the original with English subtitles. So whatever the language, you can follow it.

Tickets and how it works

There are two ways in: public tickets, sold to everyone a few days before each screening, and industry accreditation. The programme is announced from late January 2027. The industry arm, the European Film Market, runs alongside the festival.
