Thalia — Cinema. Coffee and Cycling

One screen and seventy-five seats on the Görlitzer Straße, in the middle of the Neustadt, run as a repertory house rather than a first-run cinema — a handful of screenings a week, chosen rather than scheduled. Its standing series is called Das Original ist besser!, and that is where the subtitled prints sit: the operator marks them in the title, OmdU for German subtitles and OmeU for English, and about half the programme carries one. What it leaves unmarked is German-language cinema, mostly German and Austrian documentary and independent film. The room doubles as a bar and a bicycle workshop, which is where the rest of the name comes from, and it lets the space out for the occasional late-night concert.
