Metropol Düsseldorf

The Metropol on Brunnenstraße in Bilk is the oldest surviving cinema in Düsseldorf. It opened on 4 June 1940 and was destroyed during a performance in an air raid. It was rebuilt in 1949 with more than 800 seats, torn down again in 1965, and reopened in 1972, after years of vacancy, as a repertory house with 199 seats. Udo Heimansberg turned it into an arthouse cinema in 1979. It now belongs to the Düsseldorfer Filmkunstkinos alongside the Cinema, Bambi and Atelier. Three small rooms remain, all digital: Cinerama with 107 seats, Phantom with 29 and the Souterrain with 22. The programme is first-run arthouse with regular original-version and subtitled shows, and roughly half the screenings we list here are undubbed. The building has no lift and is not step-free.
