Maille 4-9, 73728 Esslingen am Neckar
The Kommunales Kino Esslingen is a programme cinema in the heritage-protected former Lorch-Areal by the Maille. The association was founded in 1981 and moved into the Lorch-Areal in 1987, switching to 35mm. Its single screen still projects both analogue and digital and seats 83. Just under 1,300 members support the cinema. The programme centres on current films from around the world beyond the mainstream and on film history, with a focus on European cinema. The glazed LUX foyer serves as its café and meeting point. GONZO! is its children's cinema for ages 5 to about 12, the QueerFilmFestival runs in early November, and in summer come the open-air Kino auf der Burg and, from mid-August, the Kino am Campus. The German Kinematheksverbund awarded the house its cinema prize in the category "Kino, das verbindet".
