Kandelhof

The Kandelhof is the smallest of the three Freiburg cinemas run together with the Friedrichsbau and the Harmonie: a single screen on Kandelstraße in Herdern, directly opposite the small Herdern station and about fifteen minutes' walk from the main station, away from the old-town cinemas. The house describes its audience as an older one and its programme as rich in literary adaptations, and it runs a short film before every evening feature. Recurring dates include the monthly Queerfilmnacht and the Schwule Filmwoche, which the cinema calls the oldest gay film week in Germany, plus short-film programmes such as Augenblicke and the Oscar-nominated shorts. It belongs to Europa Cinemas and shared Baden-Württemberg's top prize for the 2024 annual programme with the Friedrichsbau. With one screen the daily choice is small, and most screenings are in German rather than the original version.
