The Harmonie is the largest of Freiburg's three independent cinemas: six screens on Grünwälderstraße in the old town by the Martinstor, seating between 95 and 252, among them a 102-seat Podium on the ground floor, grouped around a glass-roofed foyer. The original Harmonie-Lichtspiele opened in 1927 as an art deco theatre in the building of the liberal reading society Harmonie, founded in 1834. That building was demolished and replaced in 1992, and the cinema became an arthouse in 2008. Its operators call it their crossover house between arthouse and mainstream (Hollywood with Oscar ambitions, Bond and Avatar, family films and German hits), and the listings bear that out: only a small share of upcoming screenings is undubbed, far less than at the group's Friedrichsbau. Met and Berlin Philharmonic broadcasts, an English-language sneak and the Freiburger Puppenbühne fill out the calendar. The Bertholdsbrunnen is a minute away.
