Galerie Essen

With 43 seats, the Galerie Cinema describes itself as the smallest and the oldest arthouse cinema in the Ruhr region. Hanns-Peter Hüster opened it in 1971 on the Julienstraße in Rüttenscheid. The front door opens straight into the auditorium, with no foyer between the street and the screen. Every Sunday since June 1975 it has shown Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude. The rest of the week goes to smaller current releases that would struggle for a screen elsewhere, projected digitally or from 35mm, and the few titles listed here at any one time are mostly original versions with subtitles. It is one of five Essen cinemas run by the Essener Filmkunsttheater.
