Filmmuseum München

The Filmmuseum München is the cinema of the Münchner Stadtmuseum on St.-Jakobs-Platz. It began in 1963 as the museum's photography and film department and, with its regular screenings, became Germany's first municipal cinema. Under Enno Patalas, its second director, it built up a film archive of international standing in the 1970s. The archive now holds about 6,000 prints, among them reconstructed silent films such as Metropolis and Der Golem. The auditorium is in the basement of the historic Marstallhaus, with 165 seats and a silver screen. The programme is retrospectives and themed series, as a rule in the original version with German or English subtitles. Silent films often play with live music. Admission is 5 euros, or 3 euros for members of the MFZ friends' association. The museum is closed for a general renovation; according to its website the cinema stays open until 18 April 2027.
