Marlene Dietrich looks out from the facade on Dellplatz at the waiting audience. In 1970 Duisburg's council members were the first in Germany to vote for a municipal cinema, and the filmforum opened on 27 September that year with the Soviet film "The Cranes Are Flying". It found a home of its own on Dellplatz in 1980, in a house built in 1873 that had been rebuilt after the war and had held a cinema since the late 1940s. The two halls are filmforum, with 179 seats, and filmstudio, with 90. Current arthouse releases run alongside programmes drawn from the cinema's own archive, which holds material on around 11,000 film titles. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW has honoured the programme since 2005. Every November the Duisburger Filmwoche, the documentary festival founded in 1977, is held here. The building has no step-free access: 23 steps from the box office to the large hall, 40 to the small one.
