Cinema Düsseldorf

The Cinema shows arthouse films in Schneider-Wibbel-Gasse in Düsseldorf's Altstadt. It has been there since 1957, when it opened as the Bali, a non-stop cinema with a programme that changed daily. After the older Cinema on Kasernenstraße closed, Heinz Holzapfel and Peter Liese took over the Bali and carried the name and the film-art tradition across to it. UFA held it briefly, and the Düsseldorfer Filmkunstkinos took over in 1998. One screen, 191 seats, a cinema café attached. There is no lift, and the building is not barrier-free. It plays first runs and premieres, often with the filmmakers in the room, and the federal culture commissioner and the Filmstiftung NRW have awarded its programming repeatedly. Original versions with German subtitles run regularly, though only a handful of its screenings reach our listings at a time.
