Casablanca Bochum

The Casablanca opened during the cinema boom of the fifties at the Engelbertbrunnen on Kortumstraße, under the name Intimes, which it kept into the nineties. In March 2001 its operator closed it and had the building emptied. Michael Meyer, who also runs the Metropolis at Bochum's main station, took it over and reopened it, adding a second screen in 2006 and a third in 2011. It sits at the edge of the Bermuda3Eck, the city's bar quarter, which makes it an easy first half of an evening. The house describes its programme as ambitious mainstream and arthouse, and it runs series that reach well past the new releases: Schräge Töne for musical oddities, Kult Corner for older films, the queer homochrom strand, Sunday family screenings, afternoon matinees with the VHS Bochum. Original-version screenings are occasional here: everything we currently list is dubbed.
