Capitol Bochum

The Capitol holds the oldest address in Bochum cinema-going. The Kammerlichtspiele were built on Kortumstraße in 1911, one of five picture houses in the town then, and after the arrival of sound the hall was re-equipped and reopened in 1930 as the Capitol with about a thousand seats. Bombed and rebuilt, given a studio screen in the fifties and converted again after a fire in 1980, it now runs five screens with 577 seats between them, minutes from the Bermuda3Eck. Michael Meyer, who also runs the Casablanca and the Metropolis, took it over in 2017 and programmes it as a cinema for everyone: blockbusters and family films, cheap holiday matinees, anime and concert films, and masterpieces of film history in the original with German subtitles on the first Tuesday of each month. Four in ten of the screenings we list run undubbed, unusually many for a mainstream house.
