Atelier im Savoy Düsseldorf

In 1958 the Düsseldorf exhibitor Willi Goldermann opened his most modern house, the Savoy on Graf-Adolf-Straße. Weeks later a second auditorium followed in the basement, the Atelier, conceived as the city's first arthouse cinema with 250 seats. It joined the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater within a year and drew premiere guests from Truffaut and Jean-Pierre Léaud to Hitchcock and Schlöndorff. The Savoy, by then a centre with five screens, closed in 1999 under multiplex pressure; the Atelier was rebuilt and reopened in September 2006 with Perfume. Today it seats 189 in one hall, with 35mm still installed next to the digital projector, and belongs to the Düsseldorfer Filmkunstkinos along with the Cinema, the Bambi and the Metropol. Arthouse first runs and premieres, regularly in the original with German subtitles. There is no lift.
