Thega-Filmpalast

The Thega is a seven-screen cinema beside Hildesheim's theatre. It is named after the Theatergarten, the restaurant that opened in 1911 next to the then new theatre and began showing films after the First World War. The Thega Lichtspiele were destroyed in the air raid of March 1945, and the rebuilt cinema opened in November 1949 with Madonna in Ketten. In the 1950s came a curved prestressed-concrete building set against the neoclassical theatre next door, reputedly with almost no right angle until the 1970s rebuild, and much of its glass façade, now listed, survives. The single hall was cut into five in the early 1980s. An extension finished in December 2007 brought the house to seven screens and a terrace recalling the old garden. Auditoriums range from two 43-seat studios to the 320-seat Thega 1. The programme is mainstream first-run in German, with Tuesday classics, anime nights, a Seniorenkino and the month-long HAZ film festival each late summer.
