Schauburg Leipzig

The Schauburg opened in 1928 at the Adler, the main crossroads of Leipzig's Kleinzschocher district, in an Art Déco building by the architect Hermann Mäding. It is a listed monument, entered in the register as a rare surviving example of a 1920s picture house. The single hall seated 917 back then; in the early 1960s it became the first cinema in the GDR to be fitted with Cinerama and was known well beyond Saxony as the Panoramakino Schauburg. Conversions in 1995 and again between 2006 and 2008 left three screens of 221, 112 and 102 seats, with a bistro in the entrance. It runs as a Programmkino and Europa Cinemas member: current releases alongside arthouse titles, thematic series, family screenings at weekends, and Das Montagsoriginal, a standing Monday slot for films in their original language. The rest of the week is mostly German-language.
