Schauburg Gelsenkirchen

The Schauburg opened in Buer in 1929 as a single hall of about 1,400 seats with a Welte cinema organ. Its curved corridors, wide staircase and bright central foyer still read as 1920s theatre architecture rather than as a cinema. The building on Horster Straße is partly listed, and behind the preserved shell are three modernised auditoriums, the largest keeping the original proscenium. With the rest of the city's cinemas gone, it is one of only two left in Gelsenkirchen and the only one outside the multiplex in Erle. Michael Meyer runs it. Alongside current releases it programmes a kommunales Kino strand of more demanding work and director retrospectives, a monthly Kino-Café with coffee and cake, and weekday school screenings.
