Schauburg

Bremen's largest arthouse cinema, Vor dem Steintor in the Viertel, and the oldest of the four houses run by Schauburg Kino GmbH. It opened in September 1929 to a design by the Bremen architect Joseph Ostwald, seated 800 and was the city's first sound-film theatre. After the cinema crisis of the early 1980s an association took it over in 1982, subdivided the auditorium and ran it until 1992 as a Kulturzentrum with concerts, cabaret and school theatre alongside film. Two digital halls remain, of 258 and 79 seats, together taking more than 100,000 admissions a year. The programme is international new arthouse with documentaries, children's cinema, sneak previews and thematic strands, and this is the group's original-version house: close to a fifth of its screenings are subtitled originals. Premieres often bring the director or the cast. Trams 2, 3 and 10 stop outside.
