Rex am Ring Köln

Rex am Ring opened on 20 May 1928 at Friesenplatz as the Lichtspiele des Westens, the last big new cinema of Cologne's silent era and the only one in the city with a cinema organ. It reopened from the ruins on 1 August 1951 under its present name and was subdivided into small auditoria from 1974. For years it was Germany's most successful One-Dollar-Kino, with more than 1.77 million admissions, before turning in September 2008 to arthouse and German film. A rebuild delayed by water damage and building regulations kept it shut for three years, until 17 August 2017. It now has seven screens of between 34 and 236 seats, on the Hohenzollernring, and is run with the Metropolis as part of the Lichtblick group. New releases run long here, and classics play one Friday a month. About a quarter of the coming screenings are original-version with subtitles.
