Passage Kinos Leipzig

A cinema has stood in the Jägerhofpassage, the arcade running off Hainstraße in the centre of Leipzig, since November 1915, when it opened as the U.T. Hainstraße with 580 seats. It gave the city its first sound-film programme in 1929, served for part of the post-war years as a Soviet officers' club, and took the name Passage in 1990. The rebuilt arcade brought it back in October 1998 with four screens, and a fifth, the Casino, was added in 2015. Each is named after a Leipzig cinema that no longer exists: Astoria with 228 seats, Universum, Wintergarten, Filmeck and the 49-seat Casino. The programme is arthouse — European releases, documentaries and classic revivals, alongside anime nights, a queer series, school screenings and a monthly sneak preview shown in the original language. Around a fifth of all showings run subtitled rather than dubbed.
