The OFF Broadway sits behind a bar and a beer garden at Zülpicher Straße 24, in the student quarter south of the Neumarkt. It opened in 1949 as the Lupe and turned after a 1965 rebuild to demanding film art for a student audience, with first runs of Godard, Straub and Rivette. From 1976 it was the home of the Xscreen underground group. Renamed OFF Broadway in 1985, it was rebuilt over two years and reopened on 27 December 2000 as an independent house with two screens of 165 and 72 seats. The larger one still has 35mm projectors beside its 4K machine. The programme is European film art, world cinema and American independents, with a weekly Allerweltskino, a staff-curated classics strand and regular series in English and Spanish. Original versions with German subtitles are the declared focus, and almost everything coming up is undubbed.
