Odeon Köln

The Odeon is the arthouse cinema of Cologne's Südstadt, on Severinstraße in the middle of the Severinsviertel. The building opened in 1956 as the Rhenania, a 700-seat new build on the site of the Vrings-Oper, which the war had destroyed. From 1977 to 1986 it ran as a theatre, remembered in the city as the Trude Herr-Theater, and it reopened as a cinema under the name Odeon in October 1987. The collapse of its owner Kinowelt closed it on 30 November 2001, despite some 25,000 signatures gathered for its survival, and a company founded to rescue it reopened the house in March 2002. One hall remains, 374 seats facing an 84 m² screen, with a café and a beer garden attached. It shows around a hundred films a year, by its own count more than 70 per cent of them European, a minority in the original version with subtitles.
