Ebertplatz 19, 50668 Köln
The Metropolis stands on Ebertplatz, at the northern end of the Cologne ring. It opened in 1950 as the Burgtheater, a first-run house, reopened in 1978 as the Theater am Ebertplatz with two screens, and closed again in 1985. Catherine Laakmann restarted it in 1986. From 1992 it ran as an original-version cinema, with German dubs only in the afternoons and for children, and for a long time it was the address in Cologne for films in English. Three digital screens now seat about 470. Since March 2025 Mustafa El Mesaoudi has run it together with the Rex am Ring, and has said the emphasis will stay on original versions while leaving more room for German films. Most upcoming screenings here are undubbed, marked OV or OmU.
