Metropolis Bochum

The Metropolis sits inside Bochum's main station, on Kurt-Schumacher-Platz. It opened in 1957 as the Bali, short for Bahnhof-Lichtspiele, a non-stop cinema with 365 seats where films ran from morning until night without fixed start times. Since 1982 it has carried the present name and shown arthouse work only. One hall, around 200 seats, and a ticket booth still in its 1950s form. Michael Meyer, who took on the Casablanca in the Bermuda3Eck in 2001, runs both houses, and between them they are Bochum's alternative to the multiplexes. The programme is planned by the month rather than the week and includes daytime showings of recent releases. The adult education centre's Kommunales Kino and its Berlinale in Bochum series also use the room. Only a few dates tend to be listed at a time.
