Mal Seh'n Kino

Mal Seh'n opened in November 1984, fitted out by hand by a group of filmmakers and film enthusiasts in the rear building of a 19th-century block on Adlerflychtstraße in the Nordend — a former gymnasium belonging to the institute for the blind next door. For years it was Frankfurt's only Programmkino. It is still run as an association, Mal Seh'n Kino e.V., with Ariane Hofmann and Gunter Deller shaping the programme, and it keeps 35mm, 16mm and Super 8 machines in the booth beside the digital projector. One air-conditioned hall of 80 seats, with a café attached. Films come from everywhere and mostly run in the original with German subtitles — Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, Thai and Japanese all turn up over a season — alongside German releases, a children's slot, Sunday matinees and standing series such as Psychoanalyse und Film, run with the city's psychoanalytic institute.
