Luxor-Filmpalast Heidelberg

The Luxor-Filmpalast stands in Heidelberg's Bahnstadt, a few minutes' walk from the main station's south exit, behind a facade of anodised aluminium bands by ELEMENT·A Architekten. It opened in stages from 23 November 2017, six of the fifteen halls first, and the operator calls it the world's first cinema built to passive house standard. The halls hold about 1,800 seats, from Blue with 343 down to Stage with 44, and a rooftop open-air screen is listed alongside them. They carry names rather than numbers, among them Atlantis, Cave, Space, Jukebox and Pirates. Five were built as themed halls, one of them a pirate ship in the style of Pirates of the Caribbean. A cylindrical saltwater aquarium of about 450,000 litres stands at the centre of the foyer, stocked at the opening with around a hundred fish, three of them sharks. The programme runs from blockbusters to arthouse, and a standing Original Version strand lists the films shown undubbed.
