Kino des DFF – Deutsches Filmmuseum

The Kino des DFF is the cinema of the Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, in a listed Gründerzeit villa at Schaumainkai 41 on the Museumsufer, converted for the museum by Helge Bofinger and rebuilt again between 2009 and 2011. One hall, up to 131 seats, a screen just under three by seven metres. It continues the Kommunales Kino the city opened in 1971 and keeps that cinema’s idea of showing other films differently: in context, in series, often with a discussion afterwards. Two large Filmreihen anchor each month, one usually tied to the current exhibition, alongside standing strands such as Klassiker und Raritäten, Lecture & Film with the Goethe-Universität, and Kultkino on Friday and Saturday nights. The stated policy is the original version, subtitled in German or English where a print allows; as an archive cinema the house still runs Super 8, 16mm, 35mm and 70mm alongside DCP.
