Harmonie Frankfurt

The Harmonie has stood on Dreieichstraße in Sachsenhausen since 1920, when it opened as the Harmonie-Lichtspiele with 199 seats. Among Frankfurt's surviving cinemas only the Eldorado is older. By the house's own account it got through the lean 1960s, when television emptied the auditoriums, as a porn cinema, before Strandfilm GmbH re-established a serious programme cinema here in the late 1970s. Harald Vogel carried that on, and in January 2016 Christopher Bausch took the Harmonie over together with the Cinéma and founded Arthouse Kinos Frankfurt. There are two screens: the Große Harmonie, 186 seats with a balcony, which takes the premieres, and the Kleine Harmonie, 84 armchairs with tables from the fourth row on. A bistro bar with retro seating does coffee and cake in the afternoon and wine and cocktails later. Roughly half the upcoming programme runs in the original language with subtitles.
