Friedrichsbau

The Friedrichsbau-Lichtspiele opened on Easter Sunday, 16 April 1911 on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße between the Martinstor and the Dreisam, and by its own account is one of the five oldest surviving German cinemas of that founding era. The original ground-floor hall of 400 seats has been rebuilt twice: a basement auditorium was added in 1929 and is now the main Friedrich hall, and between 1971 and 1983 the ground floor was divided into three small Apollo screens. The four halls seat 270, 140, 38 and 28. The arthouse line goes back to Michael Wiedemann and the year 1998; since 2012 the cinema has belonged to Ludwig Ammann and Michael Isele of the Freiburg distributor Kool Filmdistribution. It is a Europa Cinemas member and shared the state's top prize for the 2024 programme with the Kandelhof. Documentaries, French and Italian film weeks and a children's strand recur, and about a third of upcoming screenings run undubbed.
