Berliner Platz 7-9, 44623 Herne
The Filmwelt opened on 27 October 2004 in the municipal utility's building at Berliner Platz 7-9, after Herne had spent several years with no cinema at all. Six screens and around 900 seats make it a multiplex by size, though Mareike Politt-Köther and Markus Köther, who run it, prefer to call their house a Miniplex. The programme is mainstream first-run and runs from family films and comedies to the big action releases, with reclining seats and service at the seat. Every upcoming screening we list is a German-dubbed version. Around it sit an arthouse strand programmed several times a week with Herne's adult education centre, a monthly ladies' night, a fortnightly afternoon Kino-Café with coffee and cake, and an open-air series in the courtyard of Schloss Strünkede in summer.
