Filmpalast Pirna

A cinema has run at Gartenstraße 11, a few streets from Pirna's market square, since the end of 1919, when it opened as the Kammer-Lichtspiele. It became the Kaiserhof-Lichtspiele in 1931 and the U.T.-Lichtspiele in October 1934. The hall was enlarged to 696 seats in 1940 and still held 621 in 1991. The address itself tracks the politics: Gartenstraße, then Adolf-Hitler-Straße, then Friedrich-Engels-Straße, then Gartenstraße again. Divided into four screens in the late 1990s, it took the Filmpalast name around 2000, and the Elbe flood of 2002 put two auditoriums and their equipment under water. Kino 1 and Kino 4 reopened at the end of October 2022 with electrically adjustable leather recliners and laser projection, the old ceiling left in place. Everything currently listed here plays in German. Besides new releases there is a Seniorenkino and a knitting-circle screening, StrickKino.
