Filmpalast Meißen

The Filmpalast occupies the large hall added in 1898/99 to the Gasthof Zur Goldenen Sonne on Theaterplatz, below Meißen's cathedral hill, at the time the biggest hall in town. Max Krebs began showing films there on 11 October 1918 as the Kammer-Lichtspiele: 1,154 seats and an eight-piece house band for the silent programme. The room was rebuilt for cinema use alone in 1935, reopened in 1953 as the Domtheater and renamed Filmbühne der Werktätigen that December. Closed in 1991, it was bought by Kieft und Politt, rebuilt as a four-screen house in 1999 and has carried the Filmpalast name since 2013. The auditoriums were refitted in 2022 and 2025. The Renaissance front house of 1561 still stands empty. The programme is current releases, almost all dubbed into German, plus Met Opera relays, an afternoon Seniorenkino and two summer open-airs, on the Gellertberg and at the Rothes Gut winery.
