Stätte 1b, 99974 Mühlhausen
The Central is a four-screen cinema in Mühlhausen's old town, a few minutes from the Steinweg shopping street. Films have been shown at Stätte 1b since 1911, when the Lichtspielpalast opened there. In 1927 the Vereinigte Mühlhäuser Lichtspiele replaced it on the same plot with the far larger Central-Lichtspiele, put up on a steel frame so it would be ready in time and opened with Der Katzensteg; by 1930 the hall held around 760. Kieft & Kieft took the Central over in 1991, rebuilt it and reopened it in 1993 with four screens. That is still the house today, with 568 seats. The programme is first-run and almost entirely dubbed: two of the screenings we currently list run in the original language. Around the new releases sit the chain's standing strands, a seniors' matinee, family screenings, ladies' previews and school bookings.
