Filmpalast Capitol Schwerin

The Capitol is a six-screen cinema on Wismarsche Straße in Schwerin, built around a hall from 1936 that is a protected monument. It opened on 21 December 1936 on the site of the old Tonhalle inn, to a design by Erich Bentrup and Hellmuth Ehrich, with a twenty-metre foyer, one hall of about 800 seats and a stage nearly ten metres high. It was modern enough to be shown as an exhibit at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. The building came through the war undamaged and was expropriated in 1947, and the Schwerin Philharmonic played here regularly from 1977. Gunnar Burmester bought it in 1995 and built further screens around the historic hall, for a time under the name Capitoleum; the Filmpalast group runs the house today. The restored Saal 1 seats about 490 and still takes concerts, comedy and theatre, and the Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern each May. Programming is mostly dubbed first-run, with the art-film strand kept in Kino 6.
