Eulenspiegel Essen

The Eulenspiegel was built on a bombsite on Steeler Straße in 1955 as the local cinema for Huttrop, Bergerhausen and Frillendorf, and its 1950s fabric is now a listed monument. Since 1980 it has been an arthouse house, run by the association Filmkunst und Kinokultur Essen, which operates three cinemas in the city and belongs to Europa Cinemas. One hall of 288 seats with generous legroom faces a screen of 100 square metres. Alongside digital projection the booth still runs 35mm and 70mm, which is why large-format classics turn up here. Two silent-film organs, a Wurlitzer and a Kimball, accompany silent screenings. A small cinema museum sits in the foyer and there is a café. The week mixes arthouse releases, some in the original language, with classics, children's shows and a monthly sneak preview.
