Eldorado

Frankfurt's oldest surviving cinema opened in 1912 on Schäfergasse as the Scala-Lichtspiele and drew premieres and stars through the 1920s. Badly damaged in the war, it was the first cinema in the city centre to reopen afterwards, in September 1947, then changed operator eleven times until Liselotte Jäger took it on in 1974 and gave it the name Eldorado. Her family ran it for 47 years; in 2021 Gabriele Jäger handed it to Christopher Bausch and it became the third of the Arthouse Kinos. It has one hall of 200 seats with stalls and gallery, air-conditioned and digitally equipped but still recognisably a classical film theatre. It stands on Klaus-Mann-Platz at the corner of Alte Gasse, a few minutes from the Konstablerwache. This is the group's original-version and festival house: almost everything here is subtitled rather than dubbed, and LICHTER Filmfest International and Nippon Connection use the room.
