Das Metropol stands on the site of Stuttgart's first railway station, opened in 1846 and superseded by today's Hauptbahnhof in 1922. The building became a cinema in 1926, ran as the 1,221-seat Ufa-Palast until bombs destroyed it in 1944, and reopened in 1948 as the Metropol-Palast for variety, film and dance. It went dark at the end of 2020 and was nearly converted into a bouldering hall; instead Lochmann Filmtheaterbetriebe, the company behind the Traumpalast cinemas, took a 15-year lease and reopened it in October 2024 after an 18-month restoration that uncovered the gilded 1950s light dome. Kino 1 seats 300 beneath it, with a balcony and the largest screen in the city centre; the smallest room holds 31 around a listed pharmacy mural. The programme is mainstream first-run in German, plus classics, opera relays and the Fantasy Filmfest each April.
