Thalia — Das Programmkino Potsdam

The Thalia opened on 16 February 1918 as the Thalia-Theater. The merchant C. Annen had it built into the former Restaurant und Konzerthaus Nowawes, and it opened with Martha, the first German film opera. The war closed the Thalia in April 1945, but the hall came through undamaged and screenings resumed the same year under Soviet control. It often served as a premiere cinema: Frank Beyer's Spur der Steine opened here in 1966, and later Loriot's Pappa ante portas. By 1997 it was a four-screen Miniplex. When the UCI opened at Potsdam's main station in 1999 attendance collapsed, and from 2001 the Thalia ran as a Programmkino instead. In 2016 that programme took the federal government's top award for the best German annual film programme. In 2025 the Thalia was one of five Brandenburg cinemas in the top band of the Kinoprogrammpreis Berlin-Brandenburg. The four halls seat 285, 177, 84 and 66.
