Scala Leverkusen

There has been a cinema at Uhlandstraße 9 in Opladen since the 1930s. The present Scala dates from the early 1950s and is the oldest still running anywhere in Leverkusen. After a string of owners and an insolvency, Eckhard Meszelinsky, who runs the Leverkusener Jazztage, bought the building at a foreclosure auction in 2007 and rebuilt it as cinema, restaurant and stage at once: the old Kino 1 became the concert and cabaret hall, and film kept two screens of 149 and 92 seats. Both project in 4K, and the smaller one still has a 35mm Ernemann. The programme mixes European arthouse and independent titles with the better mainstream releases, organised into standing strands: Junges Kino, a documentary of the week, a women's cinema, Leinwand-Legenden for classics, a monthly matinee for older audiences. Everything currently listed runs in German.
