Scala Kulturpalast

The Scala stands on Eisenbahnstraße in Werder (Havel). Built in 1940, the house opened as the Fontane Lichtspielhaus, and the six loges at the back of the hall still carry their original wall fabric from 1940. The building is listed. Gösta Oelstrom took the cinema over in 2015 and has run it since as the Scala Kulturpalast. In 2021 the Freundeskreis Scala Kulturpalast Werder e.V. bought the house with support from the town and private loans, which stopped an auction. The single hall seats 200 and has no steps. Chairs from an East German cinema stand next to seats from a modern cinema complex in Braunschweig, in four categories, some rows with tables so food can be brought to the seat. The stage is nine metres wide and six long, with theatre lighting and a PA for the evenings without a film: concerts, Kabarett and readings. Films run almost daily, family and children's programmes alongside arthouse.
