Synagogenplatz 3, 45468 Mülheim an der Ruhr
The Rio is the only arthouse cinema in Mülheim an der Ruhr, one small auditorium of about 80 seats inside the MedienHaus on Synagogenplatz, close to the city centre. It opened in 1995 as the Kino am Fluss, lost that building to conversion work in 2007, and after long negotiations with the city moved into the MedienHaus in October 2009, the new hall built to resemble the old one closely. Projection is 4K digital next to a 35mm machine with Dolby SR. It is run by the Essener Filmkunsttheater, the company behind the Lichtburg and the Filmstudio Glückauf in Essen, and follows the arthouse release calendar, holding films for weeks and adding a Monday Filmauslese slot for the season's picks. The programme is regularly recognised by the federal and state cinema programme prizes.
