Regina-Palast Leipzig

Films have been shown on this spot in Reudnitz since 1919, when the ballroom of the Schlosskeller was pressed into service as the 502-seat Schlosskeller-Lichtspiele. In 1937 the hall became a proper cinema, renamed Regina, with a new entrance onto Dresdner Straße. In 1992 it was the first cinema in Leipzig to be split into a multi-screen house — six auditoriums fitted in while the structure of the historic hall was largely left intact — and six is what it still has. It works as a neighbourhood cinema east of the centre: current releases, 3D, a school-holiday morning programme for children, and an unannounced sneak preview every Tuesday at 20:30. Roughly one screening in fifteen runs in the original language under the Pure Original label, Best of Cinema brings back a classic once a month, and Sunday at five is set aside for ambitious films that came and went too quickly.
