LURU-Kino in der Spinnerei

The LURU-Kino opened in October 2009 inside the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, the Plagwitz cotton mill that was the largest on the continent by 1907 and, since production ended after 1989, has become one of Europe's better-known sites for contemporary art. Michael Ludwig and Christoph Ruckhäberle — the LU and the RU of the name, who had previously run the cinema at the Schaubühne Lindenfels — fitted out a studio space in Halle 18 with sixty seats carried over from the Schaubühne's old Grüner Salon. The single screen runs daily on current European arthouse and documentary, with American classics and genre revivals in between and original-version screenings marked OmU in the schedule. DOK Leipzig programmes the house during the festival. The wide foyer doubles as a meeting point for the studios and galleries around it, and the audience reflects that.
