The LUCHS.KINO am ZOO opened on 27 July 2000 in Seebener Straße, by the back entrance to Halle's zoo. It has one hall, Saal 1, with 179 seats. Wolfgang Burkart runs the house and signs the note that opens each month's programme. A short film runs before the main feature, a different one every week, listed in advance with its country, year and director. The federal Kinoprogrammpreis 2025 brought 12,500 euros, 2,500 of it for the short-film programme. In 2020 the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung judged the 2019 programme the best of any arthouse cinema in central Germany and paid 20,000 euros, after main prizes in 2005 and 2009. The cinema offers morning screenings for school classes, outside the SchulKinoWochen as well, and groups of 15 or more can order a different film at short notice. Children have their own strand, DER KLEINE LUCHS.
