Lichtblick-Kino

Kastanienallee 77, 10435 Berlin

With roughly 32 seats arranged in a former storefront on Kastanienallee, the Lichtblick-Kino is among the very smallest cinemas in Berlin — and among the most beloved. The space was never designed as an auditorium, and it shows: the proportions are those of a neighbourhood shop, the ceiling is low, and the screen fills most of the far wall. Yet these constraints are what give the Lichtblick its particular intensity; a documentary screened here feels less observed than overheard. The programme favours independent, experimental and politically attuned work, often presented by the filmmakers themselves. Prenzlauer Berg's Kastanienallee, once a scrappy post-reunification strip, has gentrified considerably, but the Lichtblick endures as proof that not everything in the neighbourhood has been polished into conformity.
