Kino im Künstlerhaus

Sophienstraße 2, 30159 Hannover

Hannover's kommunales Kino has been in the Künstlerhaus on Sophienstraße since February 1983, run by the city's culture office; the Kunstverein Hannover shares the building. One auditorium holds 159 armchairs, six of them convertible to wheelchair places, with a full theatre stage behind the screen, so a screening can be combined with a live performance. A separate 40-seat room off the foyer takes talks and film seminars. The programme is built in series rather than as a run of new releases: retrospectives, country panoramas, complete works of a single director, thematic strands. The aim is to show films in context. 35 mm is a standing capability with its own ticket tier, not an occasional event. There is no online ticketing; seats are sold at the box office or reserved by phone. The auditorium goes dark for several weeks each summer and the season restarts in mid-September.
