Kino am Raschplatz

Four screens and 440 seats behind Hannover's main station, opened on 16 September 1977 with Herzog's Stroszek, Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and both halves of Bertolucci's 1900 in a single programme. The exhibitors in the centre had given the site no commercial chance, which is how it fell to Hans-Joachim Flebbe, later the founder of the Astor cinemas. The halls carry names rather than numbers: Hollywood, Fairbanks, Graffiti, added in November 1979, and Colosseum, where the city's Kommunales Kino began as a subtenant. The house closed for rebuilding in July 2007 and reopened on 18 February 2010 with an enlarged foyer. The programme is arthouse first-run with a weekly original-version screening subtitled in German, alongside Cine Club Français, Cinema Italia, children's and school screenings and director talks. Member of the Gilde network of German arthouse cinemas.
