The Gloria Palast on Karlsplatz, the Stachus, opened on 28 August 1956, built by the film producer Ilse Kubaschewski. The 800-seat house became Munich's leading premiere cinema, known for water fountain shows that rose in illuminated columns in front of the screen curtain to organ music. It was renovated over five months and reopened in December 2012 as Munich's first premium cinema, with 240 extra-wide leather armchairs with footrests and personal tables, served by staff bringing food and drink. The building dates from 1899 and has five storeys. The Gloria Palast still hosts premieres and is a venue of the Munich Film Festival.
