The Gloria Palast on Karlsplatz — the Stachus — is one of Munich's most storied cinema addresses, opened on 28 August 1956 by the legendary film producer Ilse Kubaschewski as her dream picture palace. The original 800-seat house quickly became Munich's leading premiere cinema, famous for its water fountain shows that rose in illuminated columns before the screen curtain, accompanied by organ music. After decades of operation, the Gloria Palast was carefully renovated over five months and reopened in December 2012 as Munich's first premium cinema, its 240 seats replaced by extra-wide leather armchairs with footrests and personal tables, each served by attentive staff bringing an exquisite selection of food and drinks. The building itself, a five-storey structure dating to 1899 on one of Munich's most prominent squares, lends historical weight to the premium experience. The Gloria Palast continues to host film premieres and serves as a venue for the Munich Film Festival. In a city with no shortage of cinematic heritage, the Gloria Palast holds a singular place — the house where postwar Munich's love affair with the movies found its most glamorous expression.
