Nürnberg's kommunales Kino, run by the city's KunstKulturQuartier on the first and third floors of the Künstlerhaus on Königstraße. It opened on 29 September 2000, though municipal film work in the city goes back to 1972, and draws around 40,000 visitors a year to two 80-seat auditoria, kinoeins and the kommkino. The programme is built in monthly themes around international new releases and re-releases, with a standing Fremdsprachenkino strand of subtitled originals, a film club and silent films with live music. The second room has a separate life: its late slots are programmed by Filmfabrik – Kino im Komm e.V., volunteers who have shown films in this building since 1974 — horror and trash, forgotten titles, Asian cinema barely distributed in Germany, first features, regularly on 35 mm. Every August the programme moves outdoors to the Katharinenruine for the SommerNachtFilmFestival.
